Presented below are the tentative categories that compose the 2004 MLP Art Awards. These categories are subject to redefinition before the Art Panel begins judging submissions.

GENERAL
Artist of the Year
"Artist of the Year" is the person who best represents My Little Pony through their artwork. This person must have an impressive, desirable body of work produced with technical proficiency. The "Artist of the Year" is chosen by both the Public and the Panel. Each Panelist's vote for "Artist of the Year" is worth 10% of the total vote. The Public's cummulative vote is normalized to the remaining 50% of the final vote. [For example, if Artist X receives 50% of the Public's vote, that equals to 25% of the total vote in this category].
Piece of the Year [People's Choice]
"Piece" of the year is the single best piece of My Little Pony artwork, as chosen by the public.
Piece of the Year, Technical
"Piece" of the year is a single piece of My Little Pony artwork that best embodies the My Little Pony medium. Emphasis on technical profeciency and excecution. This awards is chosen solely by the Panel.
2-D [two dimensional]
Pencil/Ink Image of the Year [People's Choice]
Artwork considered in this category is created using either pens or pencils [both normal and colored]. The Public chooses their favorite Pencil/Ink rendering from the works submitted. Charcoal images also compete in this category.
Pencil/Ink Image of the Year [Technical]
The Art Panel chooses the best Pencil/Ink image based on technical excecution.
Paint Image of the Year [People's Choice]
Artwork submitted to this category is to be created using paint exclusively. All types of painted artworks are consolidated into this category, be it from normal paints, watercolor, finger paints, etc.. The Public will choose their favorite painted image from all works submitted.
Paint Image of the Year [Technical]
The Art Panel chooses the best Painted image based on technical excecution.
Digitally Rendered [CG] Image of the Year [People's Choice]
Artwork submitted to this category was created using a computer graphics program or tablet, or drawn seperately, scanned, and colored. In the eyes of the Awards, a "CG" image is one that completed using mostly computer tools. The Public will choose its favorite digitally rendered image from all works submitted.
Digitally Rendered [CG] Image of the Year [Technical]
The Art Panel chooses the best computer generated image of the year based on technical proficiency.
Animation of the Year [People's Choice]
Any animated image qualifies in this category. Flash movies and animated .gifs are examples. The Public will choose the best Animated sequence from all works applicable.
Animation of the Year [Technical]
The Panel will choose the best Animated sequence with emphasis on technical proficiency.
Photograph of the Year [People's Choice]
The Public will choose the best Photograph of the year.
Photograph of the Year [Technical]
The Art Panel will choose the best Photograph of the year based on technical proficiency.
3-D [three dimensional]
Sculpture of the Year [People's Choice]
A Sculpture is a three-dimensional work, created in the likeness of a My Little Pony. Sculptures can be composed of many different materials, such as clay, porcelan, stone, etc.. The Public will choose the best Sculture from all works submitted.
Sculpture of the Year [Technical]
The Art Panel will choose the best MLP Sculpture based on technical proficieny.
Crafts Work of the Year, Sewing [People's Choice]
A Seweing Craft is a piece of work made using thread or threaded materials. A MLP knitted sweater, a hand-sewn custom Plushie, a latch-hook rug, etc.. The Public will choose the best Sewing Craft Work from all applicable submissions.
Crafts Work of the Year, Sewing [Technical]
The Art Panel will choose the best Sewing Craft work based on technical proficiency.
